\DeclareFixedFootnote{\fnIesous}{IESOUS (``ee-ay-SOOS''). The Greek form of Hebrew Yehoshua — the same name 
rendered "Joshua" in the Septuagint, where IESOUS son of Naue leads Israel into the promised 
land (see the book of Joshua). 
A Greek-literate Jewish reader hearing IESOUS in the Gospels would have caught this 
echo instantly: a new IESOUS, leading us anew into what is promised.

"Jesus" hides this. Latin first wrote the name as IESUS — Latin had no letter J yet; J began 
as a mere variant way of writing I, still carrying the same sound, and wasn't distinguished as 
a separate letter with its own sound until the 1500s, not fully settled until the 1600s. The 
FNT retains IESOUS to keep the echo audible.
