In the Hebrew tradition, anointing with oil was the act of consecration 
by which a person was set apart for a sacred office --- 
priest, prophet, or king. 
The MESSIAH was the long-awaited figure who would fulfill all three.

By the first century, ``Messiah'' had accumulated layers of expectation: 
a Davidic king who would restore Israel's sovereignty, 
defeat her enemies, and inaugurate the reign of God. 
Jesus consistently resisted the political dimensions of this expectation --- 
the liberation from Roman rule the people were actively anticipating --- 
while accepting the title on his own terms.

CHRISTOS is not a surname. 
``Jesus Christ'' means ``Jesus [the] Anointed'' --- 
a title that became so attached to his name 
that its meaning was already fading within a generation.
