Occasion: When I'm angry with someone I love

Lord, I am angry,
and the person I am angry with
is someone I love.

That makes it harder, not easier.

I keep rehearsing what happened,
what was said,
what should have been said.
In every version I am right,
and every argument ends with me vindicated.
But I know better.

Because -- what if I'm wrong?
What if some of what stings
is mine to own, not theirs to answer for?

Be with me before I speak again.
Show me clearly what is true here,
and what is only my pride talking.

Keep me from words
that would feel good for a few seconds
and hurt for years.

I do not ask You to make me less honest.
I ask You to make my honesty loving.

Let me be still long enough
to remember all that this person means to me.
