Occasion: Wedding

Lord, two families become one today.
Two names on one line.
Two chairs pulled up to one table.

Bless what is beginning here ---
not only the vows,
but the years after them:
the ordinary Tuesdays,
the shared bills,
the small kindnesses that carry more weight than the big promises.

Keep them quick to forgive,
slow to keep score.
Teach them to argue like two people who are staying,
not two people looking for the door.

Let their table hold whatever the years bring ---
quiet suppers or crowded ones,
the same two chairs or many more,
every one of them a gift.

You have brought them to this day, Lord.
Bring them the rest of the way,
one ordinary day at a time.
