\lettrine[lraise=0.05]{W}{e} have seen four examples 
where the Second Law of Thermodynamics would suggest 
--- at best --- maintenance of the status quo, 
and more likely a steady deterioration. 
(Many more examples could be cited.)

But in all four instances, an enormous transformation bootstrapped itself to greater complexity. 
A transformation from the less sophisticated into something unexpected and unprecedented.
