\section{Samaritans}
The Samaritans were of mixed Jewish and Gentile 
ancestry --- descendants of those left in the northern kingdom after the Assyrian 
deportation (722 BCE), who intermarried with peoples settled there by Assyria. 
Rejected by both Jews and Gentiles, they occupied an uncomfortable middle ground 
in Jesus' world.
