Occasion: Bringing dreams before God

Lord, I have built mansions in my mind ---
work I could do,
places I could go,
a life that is wide and bright when I imagine it.

I return to these mansions often.
Sometimes they give me hope.
Sometimes I hold them so tightly
that any other future feels like loss.

I bring these plans to You
before they become a place I refuse to leave.
I want them so much,
and I'm afraid of being disappointed.

Save me from loving the picture
more than I love Your voice.
Save me from calling every strong wish
``a sign.''

Teach me to desire without demanding,
to hope without pretending I know,
and to wait without closing my heart.

Take what is false.
Keep what is true.
Open the right door,
and close the shiny wrong one,
even when I do not understand why.

These are the mansions in my mind.
Grant what serves me, Lord,
and quietly close the rest.
