Occasion: When I need to forgive

Lord, I know I need to forgive.
I also know I cannot make the hurt disappear
by deciding that I should.

What happened still matters.
What was said was still said.
What was broken does not become unbroken
because I forgive.

So teach me what forgiveness actually asks of me.

Keep me from feeding this wound
just to keep the anger alive.
Keep me from returning to the old scene
to prosecute the case one more time.

I do not want what was done to me
to become something I carry everywhere.

You have shown me mercy
without calling wrong right.

Teach me that kind of mercy.

I may need to forgive again tomorrow,
and again after that.

For today,
help me loosen my grip.

The hurt can remain part of my story
without it becoming part of who I am.
