> Why are you in despair?
>> Why are you in despair, my soul? Why are you disturbed within me? Hope in God! For I shall still praise him for the saving help of his presence.

Occasion: When today feels wasted
Lord, evening is here,
and what can I point to?
The hours slipped,
the plan fell apart,
I sometimes started, and mostly stopped,
and now the light is fading.
I keep going back over what I meant to do,
measuring the day by what remains unfinished.
I am frustrated with myself,
and tired of carrying the feeling
that I should have done more.
Meet me before I throw this day away in my mind.
Show me what You still see in it.
If I call it useless,
I will sink into shame,
and shame will waste the next day too.
One empty day has a way of writing itself into the next.
Gather what was scattered ---
the small duty I finished,
the harsh word I held back,
the rest my body needed,
the prayer I am praying now.
Help me receive these hours as they were,
not as I wish they had been.
I do not need to pretend they were fruitful
or force myself to feel glad.
Only keep me from believing
that an imperfect day is beyond Your care.
The light is fading, Lord.
Stay with me in the fading light,
and make even this day part of Your mercy.
Amen.
