Occasion: Seeking contentment in God
|
|
|
|
Lord, teach me to sit still in the life I have today ---
|
|
this place,
|
|
this body,
|
|
this table,
|
|
this portion.
|
|
|
|
Some days, what I have does not feel like enough.
|
|
I compare it with what I hoped for,
|
|
or with what seems to have been given to others.
|
|
I keep imagining that contentment is waiting
|
|
just beyond the life in front of me.
|
|
|
|
Let me receive what is here
|
|
without always leaning toward what is elsewhere.
|
|
|
|
Wanting more can become a low noise
|
|
that follows me through the day
|
|
and keeps me from tasting what is in my hand.
|
|
I do not always know how to quiet it.
|
|
Even gratitude can feel like something
|
|
I am trying to force.
|
|
|
|
Be my enough.
|
|
Not as a phrase I repeat
|
|
to make disappointment disappear,
|
|
but as grace for this present moment.
|
|
|
|
In an ordinary meal.
|
|
In an unremarkable hour.
|
|
In the quiet after the dishes are put away.
|
|
|
|
Here, Lord.
|
|
Here in this room.
|
|
Here, be my enough.
|
|
|
|
Amen.
