> My Own Familiar Friend
>> Yes, my own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, who ate bread with me, has lifted up his heel against me.
Occasion: After being let down
Lord, I waited for help,
and it never came.
The place where someone should have stood with me
stayed empty.
The promise went cold.
I keep returning to what was promised
and to what didn't happen.
Part of me is still waiting,
still wondering whether I asked too much,
or trusted too easily.
I feel the pull to make a refuge of this hurt ---
to hold it close,
to let it become who I am now.
``Easier that way,'' I tell myself.
Show me how to come to You instead,
without pretending this did not wound me.
I can't call it nothing.
It wasn't nothing.
I know the other pull too:
to trust no one,
to need little,
to live shut away.
That way feels safer,
and lonelier.
Be more gracious than the promise that failed.
Meet me in the empty place.
Teach me, slowly, to take refuge in You
without asking me to deny what happened.
The place beside me stayed empty.
But no place will ever be empty of You.
Amen.
