> I haven't seen the righteous forsaken
>> I have been young, and now am old, yet I haven't seen the righteous forsaken, nor his children begging for bread.

Occasion: Fear of not having enough
Lord, I count and count again ---
the food remaining,
the gas remaining,
the days remaining before more comes in.
Still it feels thin in my hands.
I try to be sensible,
but fear keeps changing the numbers.
Enough begins to look like almost nothing,
and tomorrow feels hungry before it has even arrived.
Teach me what is need,
and what is fear whispering in the dark.
Keep me from reaching for more just to quiet myself,
and give me grace for what is actually before me today.
This fear can harden my heart.
It can close my hand,
and turn every face into a threat.
Make me the kind of person who receives today's bread
with gratitude instead of suspicion,
someone who can still share a piece of it.
I count and count again.
Instead, I should count on You.
Amen. |
