> You shall not be afraid of the terror by night
>> You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day.
Occasion: Children afraid of the dark
Lord, hear the small voice from this child's bed ---
the call after the light is out,
the blanket pulled up to the chin,
the eyes fixed on the closet door.
Be gentle with this fear.
It may seem small in daylight,
but right now it feels large and close.
Make Your safety plain in ways this child can hear.
Do not let this little one feel foolish for being afraid.
The dark can fill with stories.
A coat can look like a stranger,
and every shadow can seem to threaten.
Stand near this bed.
Be present when no one can be seen.
Let the breathing slow.
Let tense hands loosen their hold.
Let sleep come without fear.
Let the child wake and remember that the night held,
and that fear did not have the final word.
You are Lord of the closet.
You are Lord of the dark.
You are Lord by the bed.
Keep watch until morning.
Amen.
