> Out of the Miry Clay
>> He brought me up also out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay. He set my feet on a rock, and gave me a firm place to stand.
Occasion: After a failure
This is the morning after, Lord.
The mistake is still here.
Its weight sits in my chest.
I can hardly look at what I broke.
Part of me still cannot believe I did it.
Part of me knows exactly how I did.
I keep wishing I could return to the moment before,
but what's done is done.
Help me face the damage without hiding.
Give me the courage to name it plainly,
without excuses
and without making myself beyond mercy.
I want to sink into shame,
to keep replaying the moment,
to let one fall become my whole name.
Shame feels easier than repair sometimes.
It asks nothing of me
except that I stay down.
Raise me toward the next honest thing ---
an apology spoken truly,
a mess cleaned up,
a small duty done well.
I do not know how much can be mended.
I do not know how long it will take.
Give me grace for what can be done today,
and humility for what must be carried.
I have been staring at the place where I fell.
Now set my feet on a place to stand.
Amen.
