Occasion: Thankfulness for this morning
Lord, thank You for this morning ---
for light splayed across the floor,
for the coffee warm in my hands,
for a body rising yet again from sleep.
I did not make this day.
I did not call the light into being
or keep myself through the dark.
I have simply opened my eyes
and found Your mercy waiting for me.
Keep me from acting as if I made this hour.
Let gratitude be my first word
before worry begins naming what must be done,
before yesterday and tomorrow reach for me again.
I can move into the day quickly,
reach for my phone,
fill my head with folly,
and miss the gift before me.
I can hurry past what I prayed to be given
and treat each day
as nothing more than a list of demands and amusements.
So make me slow enough to receive ---
the quiet,
the bird at the window,
the open page,
the mercy of another beginning.
And when the day grows crowded,
bring me back to this:
I am alive.
This morning was given.
I do not have to possess it
to be glad in it.
Thank You for this morning, Lord.
Thank You for this morning.
Amen.
