Occasion: Moving into a new home
Lord, the boxes are stacked in the garage,
the windows are bare,
the key is still fresh in my hand,
my bed not yet assembled.
I am grateful to be here,
but there are many hours of work before I can rest.
There is excitement in these empty rooms,
and also the weariness of opening yet another box.
Come into this place as I arrange it.
Make this more than a shelter with my things in it.
Let me belong here without expecting these walls
to give me what only You can give.
I can carry old noise through a new door.
I can fill these rooms with things and still not rest.
My address can change
while my fears remain where they were.
Don't let me build a life that shuts You out.
Let goodness cross this threshold.
Let kindness dwell in these rooms.
Make this house a place of peace,
of simple meals,
of restful sleep,
of welcome.
And on the days when peace feels far away,
teach me to receive the grace of this place
one ordinary moment at a time.
Be the first guest in this house,
the one who never leaves,
the one who makes it a home.
