> Teach Us To Count Our Days
>> So teach us to count our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.
Occasion: Choosing how to spend your time
There are too many tasks in front of me, Lord ---
the message to answer,
the work that awaits,
the person who needs my ear,
the errand that can't wait.
They all call my name,
each insisting it belongs first.
I do not always know the difference
between what is truly needed
and what is simply loud.
Teach me to count this day well.
Show me what belongs first,
and what can be safely left undone.
Help me accept that choosing one thing
means setting another aside.
I can scatter myself
until night comes.
Touching many things
but serving no one with a whole heart.
I hurry so easily,
my attention divides so quickly,
and I feel guilty
when I cannot meet every need.
Give me a wise heart that can choose,
that can stay with one task,
that can look a person in the eye
and not be pulled away by every small demand.
Not everything first.
Not everything now.
Your will first.
Amen.
