\subsubsection{The Temptation of \Iesous}
|
|
\VS{1} Now \Iesous\fn\Iesous{}, full of [the] Holy Spirit,
|
|
returned from the Jordan, and was led in the spirit in the wilderness,
|
|
\VS{2} being tested forty days by the devil.
|
|
And he ate nothing in those days, and upon completing them he was hungry.
|
|
\VS{3} Now the devil says to him:
|
|
If you are [the] Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.
|
|
\VS{4} And \Iesous answered him: It is written that\footnote{Deut.8:3}:
|
|
|
|
\begin{verse}
|
|
Not upon bread alone will [a] person \zoe{}-live\fnZoe{} \\
|
|
But upon every word\fnRema{} of God.
|
|
\end{verse}
|
|
|
|
\VS{5} And bringing him up he showed him all the kingdoms of the inhabited-world
|
|
in [an] instant of time.
|
|
\VS{6} And the devil said to him:
|
|
To you will I give all this authority and their glory,
|
|
because to me have they been given over and to whom I wish to give it.
|
|
\VS{7} You therefore, if you worship before me,
|
|
all will be yours.
|
|
\VS{8} And \Iesous answering said to him:
|
|
It is written\footnote{Deut.6:13}:
|
|
|
|
\begin{verse}
|
|
You will worship [the] Lord your God \\
|
|
And him only will you serve.
|
|
\end{verse}
|
|
|
|
\VS{9} But he brought him to \Ierous
|
|
and stood him upon the pinnacle of the temple,
|
|
and said to him:
|
|
If you are [the] Son of God, throw yourself down from there,
|
|
\VS{10} For it is written that\footnote{Ps.91:11}:
|
|
|
|
\begin{verse}
|
|
He has commanded his angels to protect you.
|
|
\end{verse}
|
|
|
|
\VS{11} And that\footnote{Ps.91:12}:
|
|
|
|
\begin{verse}
|
|
Upon [their] hands they will bear you \\
|
|
Lest you dash your foot upon [a] stone.
|
|
\end{verse}
|
|
|
|
\VS{12} And \Iesous answering said to him that:
|
|
It is said\footnote{Deut.6:16}:
|
|
|
|
\begin{verse}
|
|
You will not test [the] Lord your God.
|
|
\end{verse}
|
|
|
|
\VS{13} And having completed every test the devil withdrew from him
|
|
until [an] opportune-time\fnKairos{}.
|
|
|
|
\subsubsection{The Beginning of \Iesous's Ministry in \Galileias}
|
|
\VS{14} And \Iesous returned in the power of the spirit to \Galileias,
|
|
and [the] report went out to all the surrounding region concerning him.
|
|
\VS{15} And he himself was teaching in their synagogues,
|
|
being glorified by all.
|
|
|
|
\subsubsection{Rejection at Nazareth}
|
|
\VS{16} And he came into Nazareth,
|
|
where he had grown up,
|
|
and entered according to his custom
|
|
in the day of the Sabbaths\fnSabbaths{} into the synagogue,
|
|
and stood to read.
|
|
\VS{17} And [the] scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him,
|
|
and having opened the scroll he found the place where it was written:
|
|
|
|
\begin{verse}
|
|
\VS{18} [The] spirit of the Lord [is] upon me \\
|
|
Because of which he has anointed me \\
|
|
to preach to the poor \\
|
|
He has sent me to heal the crushed, \\
|
|
To proclaim pardon to the captives \\
|
|
and sight to the blind, \\
|
|
To send away the oppressed in pardon, \\
|
|
\VS{19} To proclaim [the] welcome\footnote{or ``acceptable''} year of the Lord.
|
|
\end{verse}
|
|
|
|
\VS{20} And having rolled up the scroll
|
|
[and] having returned it to the assistant,
|
|
he sat, and all eyes in the synagogue were looking intently on him.
|
|
\VS{21} So he began to be speaking to them that:
|
|
Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your ears.
|
|
\VS{22} And all were testifying to him
|
|
and were marveling upon the words of grace proceeding out of his mouth,
|
|
and were saying:
|
|
Is this not Ioseph's son?
|
|
\VS{23} And he said to them:
|
|
Certainly you will tell me this parable:
|
|
Physician, heal yourself;
|
|
as much as we heard came to pass in \Kapernaoum, do also here in your native-land.
|
|
\VS{24} But he said:
|
|
Truly I say to you that no prophet is welcome\footnote{or ``acceptable''} in his native-land.
|
|
\VS{25} But in truth I say to you,
|
|
there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elias,
|
|
when the heavens were shut three years and six months,
|
|
that there came-to-pass [a] great famine upon all the land\fnGe{},
|
|
\VS{26} and to none of them was Elias sent
|
|
except to Sarpta of \Sidon to [a] widow woman.
|
|
\VS{27} And there were many lepers in Israel upon Elisha,
|
|
and none of them were healed except Naiman the Syrene.
|
|
\VS{28} And all were filled with rage in the synagogue when they heard these [things],
|
|
\VS{29} and having risen up they threw him out of the city
|
|
and led him to [the] brow of the mountain upon which their city was built,
|
|
in order to throw him down the cliff.
|
|
\VS{30} But he having passed through their midst departed.
|
|
|
|
\subsubsection{Ministry in \Kapernaoum}
|
|
\VS{31} And he came down into \Kapernaoum [into a] city of \Galileias.
|
|
And he was teaching them on the Sabbaths,
|
|
\VS{32} and they were astonished upon his teaching, for his word was in authority.
|
|
|
|
\VS{33} And in the synagogue was [a] man
|
|
having [a] spirit of [an] unclean demon,
|
|
and he cried out in [a] great voice,
|
|
\VS{34} Yikes! What [is] to you and to us%
|
|
\footnote{i.e. ``What do we have do to with each other?''
|
|
}, \Iesous \Nazarious? Have you come to destroy us?
|
|
I know who you are: the holy one of God.
|
|
\VS{35} And \Iesous rebuked him saying:
|
|
Be silenced and come out from him.
|
|
And having thrown him down in [their] midst the demon came out from him,
|
|
not having hurt him.
|
|
\VS{36} And wonder came to pass upon all,
|
|
and they spoke to one another saying:
|
|
What is this word\fnLogos{},
|
|
that in authority and power he commands the unclean spirits and they come out?
|
|
\VS{37} And the news concerning him went out into all the surrounding region.
|
|
|
|
\VS{38} But having risen up from the synagogue he entered into the house of Simon.
|
|
But Simon's mother-in-law was being held by [a] great fever,
|
|
and they asked him concerning her.
|
|
\VS{39} And having stood by her he rebuked the fever,
|
|
and it left her.
|
|
And immediately having arisen she was serving them.
|
|
|
|
\VS{40} But when the sun set,
|
|
all as many were having sickliness by various diseases they brought them to him,
|
|
but on each of them having laid [his] hands he was healing them.
|
|
\VS{41} And demons also were come out of many,
|
|
crying out and saying that:
|
|
You are the Son of God.
|
|
And rebuking [them] he did not permit [them] to speak this,
|
|
because they made him known to be the Anointed\fnChristos{} [One].
|
|
|
|
\VS{42} Now when day came to pass,
|
|
having gone out he went to [a] wilderness place,
|
|
and the crowds were seeking him,
|
|
and they came to him,
|
|
and were hindering him so as not to go from them.
|
|
\VS{43} But he said to them that:
|
|
Also to the other cities must I preach the Kingdom of God,
|
|
for on this was I sent.
|
|
\VS{44} And he was preaching in the synagogues of Judea%
|
|
