\subsubsection{\Ioudas's Decision to Betray \Iesous}
|
|
\VS{1} Now the festival of unleavened [breads], the [one] called Passover, was at hand.
|
|
\VS{2} And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how to take him away,
|
|
for they were fearing the people.
|
|
|
|
\VS{3} Now \Satan entered into \Ioudas being called \Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve;
|
|
\VS{4} and having departed he discussed with the chief priests and chief magistrates
|
|
how he may deliver him up to them.
|
|
\VS{5} And they rejoiced, and agreed to give him silver.
|
|
\VS{6} And he consented, and was seeking the favorable opportunity
|
|
to deliver him up to them apart from [the] crowd.
|
|
|
|
\subsubsection{The Passover}
|
|
\VS{7} So the day of the unleavened [breads] came,
|
|
on which it was necessary to observe the Passover.
|
|
\VS{8} And he sent \Petros and \John saying:
|
|
Having gone prepare for us the Passover in order that we may eat [it].
|
|
\VS{9} But they said to him: How do you wish we prepare [it]?
|
|
\VS{10} But he said to them:
|
|
Behold when you enter into the city, someone\fnAnthropos{} carrying earthen vessels will meet you.
|
|
Follow him to the house into which he enters
|
|
\VS{11} and say to the house-master of the house:
|
|
The teacher says to you: Where is the guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?
|
|
\VS{12} And that [one] will show you [a] large furnished upper-room. Prepare [it] there.
|
|
\VS{13} So having departed they found [it] exactly as he had said to them: and they prepared the Passover.
|
|
|
|
\subsubsection{The Lord's Supper}
|
|
\VS{14} And when the hour came to pass he reclined, and the apostles with him.
|
|
\VS{15} And he said to them:
|
|
With desire have I desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.
|
|
\VS{16} For I say to you that I will \negd{not} eat it until it be fulfilled in the Kingdom of God.
|
|
\VS{17} And having taken [the] cup, having given thanks he said:
|
|
Take this and divide [it] among yourselves,
|
|
\VS{18} for I say to you, I will \negd{not} drink of the product of the vine
|
|
from now until the Kingdom of God come.
|
|
\VS{19} And having taken bread, having given thanks he broke and gave [it] to them saying:
|
|
This is my body given in your behalf; this be doing in my remembrance.
|
|
\VS{20} And the cup likewise after dining, saying:
|
|
This cup [is] the new contract in my blood, being poured out in your behalf.
|
|
|
|
\subsubsection{A Final Discourse}
|
|
\VS{21} Nevertheless behold: the hand delivering me up is with me upon the table.
|
|
\VS{22} For the Son of Humanity\fnAnthropos{} indeed proceeds according to the [things] appointed,
|
|
[but] woe to that person\fnAnthropos{} through whom he is delivered up.
|
|
\VS{23} And they began to be arguing among themselves who it might be
|
|
among them [about] to do this [thing].
|
|
|
|
\VS{24} So [a] dispute also came to pass among them,
|
|
who of them seems to be greater.
|
|
\VS{25} But he said to them: The kings of the nations lord over them,
|
|
and those having authority over them are called benefactors.
|
|
\VS{26} But you [are] not thus, but the [one] greater among you
|
|
let\fnImperative{} him become as the least, and the [one] leading as the
|
|
[one] serving.
|
|
\VS{27} For who is greater, the [one] reclining or the [one] serving? Is it
|
|
not the [one] reclining? But I am in your midst as the [one] serving.
|
|
|
|
\VS{28} But you are those who have remained with me in my test.
|
|
\VS{29} And I will appoint to you [a] kingdom just as my father appointed me [one],
|
|
\VS{30} in order that you be eating and be drinking at my table in my kingdom,
|
|
and sit upon thrones judging the twelve tribes of \Israel.
|
|
|
|
\VS{31} \Simon, \Simon, behold \Satan has requested to sift you [all]\fnYouPlural{} as wheat,
|
|
\VS{32} but I have asked concerning you in order that your trust not give out;
|
|
and you when you have recovered, strengthen\footnote{or ``establish''} your brothers.
|
|
\VS{33} But he said to him:
|
|
Lord, with you am I prepared even to prison and to death to be going.
|
|
\VS{34} But he said: I say to you, \Petros, the rooster will not cry today until thrice you will deny knowing me.
|
|
|
|
\VS{35} And he said to them: When I sent you without purse or bag or sandals,
|
|
did you lack anything? And they said: Nothing.
|
|
\VS{36} But he said to them: But now let\fnImperative{} the [one] having [a] purse take [it],
|
|
likewise also [a] bag, and the [one] not having let\fnImperative{} him sell his garment and buy [a] sword.
|
|
\VS{37} For I say to you that this [thing] having been written must be completed\fnTelos{} in me\footnote{Isa.53:12}:
|
|
|
|

And with the lawless he was reckoned.
|
|

|
|
|
|
For it has completion by me.
|
|
\VS{38} So they said: Lord, here [are] two swords.
|
|
And he said: It is enough.
|
|
|
|
\subsubsection{On the Mount of Olives}
|
|
\VS{39} And having gone out he went according to custom to the Mount of Olives.
|
|
And the disciples also followed him.
|
|
\VS{40} Now having come upon the place he said to them:
|
|
Be praying not to enter into trial.
|
|
\VS{41} And he withdrew from them [about] [a] stone's throw and having knelt he was praying,
|
|
\VS{42} saying: Father, if you intend [it], take this cup from me,
|
|
nevertheless let\fnImperative{} not my will but yours come to pass.
|
|
\VS{43} Now there appeared to him [an] angel from heaven strengthening him.
|
|
\VS{44} And becoming more fervently in agony he was praying;
|
|
and his sweat became as drops of blood falling upon the ground\fnGe{}
|
|

\VS{45} And having stood up from his praying, having come to the disciples
|
|
he found them having fallen asleep from grief,
|

\VS{46} and he said to them: Why do you sleep?
|
|
Having stood up be praying, in order that you not enter into [the] test.
|
|
|
|
\subsubsection{Betrayal and Arrest}
|
|
\VS{47} While he was yet speaking behold [a] crowd,
|
|
and the [one] being called \Ioudas one of the twelve,
|
|
came before them, and he drew near to \Iesous to kiss\footnote{From PHILIA} him.
|
|
\VS{48} But \Iesous said to him: \Ioudas, would you deliver up the Son of Humanity with [a] kiss?
|
|
\VS{49} But when they saw what will be concerning him they said:
|
|
Lord, do we strike with the sword?
|
|
\VS{50} And [a] certain one among them struck the slave of the chief priest, and cut off his right ear.
|
|
\VS{51} But answering \Iesous said:
|
|

The Greek here is terse and genuinely ambiguous:
|
|
literally something like ``permit/allow -- up to this point,'' with no stated object supplied (that is, allow WHAT exactly?).
|
|
Most translations take it as \Iesous telling the disciples to stop the violence (``No more of this!''),
|
|
but it could equally mean ``let it happen, this far'' -- i.e., let the arrest proceed without resistance.
|
|
The words themselves don't resolve which is meant.
|
|
}; and having touched his earlet he healed him.
|
|
\VS{52} But \Iesous said to the chief priests and soldiers of the temple
|
|
and elders having come to be upon him:
|
|
As upon [a] robber do you come out with swords and clubs?
|
|
\VS{53} When I was daily with you in the temple you did not stretch out your hands upon me.
|
|
But this is your hour and the authority of darkness.
|
|
|
|
\subsubsection{\Iesous's Condemnation and \Petros's Denials}
|
|
\VS{54} Now having seized him they brought and led him into the house of the chief priest,
|
|
but \Petros followed afar off.
|
|
\VS{55} Now [a] fire being kindled in the midst of the courtyard and others having sat down,
|
|
\Petros sat in their midst.
|
|
\VS{56} Now [a] certain maid-servant having seen him and having looked intently at him said:
|
|
This [one] also was with him.
|
|
\VS{57} But he denied [it] saying: I do not know him, ma'am\fnWoman{}.
|
|
\VS{58} And after [a] little others having seen him said:
|
|
You also are among them. But \Petros said: Man, I am not.
|
|
\VS{59} And having gone away [about] an hour a certain other [man] was insisting saying:
|
|
In truth this [one] also was with him, for he is also [a] Galilean.
|
|
\VS{60} But
|
|
\Petros said: [O] person, I do not know what you say.
|
|
And immediately while he was speaking the rooster cried out.
|
|
\VS{61} And having turned the Lord fixed his gaze on \Petros.
|
|
And \Petros remembered the word of the Lord,
|
|
as he said to him that --- before the rooster cries out today you will deny me thrice.
|
|
\VS{62} And having gone out, he wept bitterly.
|
|
|
|
\VS{63} And the men\fnAner{} having him were mocking him, beating [him],
|
|
\VS{64} and having covered him were asking him saying:
|
|
Prophesy, who is the [one] having struck you?
|
|
\VS{65} And many other [things] they were saying to him slandering [him].
|
|
|
|
\VS{66} And as it became day, the elders of the people were gathered,
|
|
both chief priests and scribes, and they led him into their council,
|
|
\VS{67} saying: If you are the Anointed\fnChristos{} [One], tell us.
|
|
But he said to them: If I tell you, you will \negd{not} trust.
|
|
\VS{68} And if I ask, you will \negd{not} answer.
|
|
\VS{69} But from now [on] will the Son of Humanity be sitting at the right [hand] of the power of God.
|
|
\VS{70} So they all said: Are you therefore the Son of God?
|
|
But he said to them: You say that I am.
|
|
\VS{71} But they said:
|
|
What further need do we have of witnesses? For we have heard from his mouth.
|
