\subsection{Luke 3}
\subsubsection{The Ministry of \John the Baptist}
\VS{1} Now in the fifteenth year of the rule of Caesar Tiberius,
Pontius \Pilate being governor of the Jews, and \Herod being tetrarch of \Galilee,
and \Phillip his brother being tetrarch of the regions of Itourais and Trachonti,
and Lusanius being tetrarch of Abilene,
\VS{2} upon the priesthood of Hanna and Caiaphas,
the word\fnRema{} of the Lord came to pass upon \John\fn\John{} the son of Zachariah in the wilderness.
\VS{3} And he came into all the regions around the \Jordan
preaching [the] baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
\VS{4} As it is written in the scroll of the words of Isaiah the prophet:
\begin{verse}
{}[A] voice crying in the wilderness \\
Prepare the way of the Lord \\
Be making straight his paths; \\
\VS{5} He will fill every valley, \\
And every mountain and hill will be humbled, \\
And the crooked will be into straight, \\
And the rough into smooth roads, \\
\VS{6} And all flesh will see the salvation of God.
\end{verse}
\VS{7} He was saying therefore to those coming out to be baptized by him:
Generation of vipers, who showed you to be fleeing from the impending wrath?
\VS{8} Produce therefore fruit worthy of repentance;
and do not begin to be saying among yourselves,
[the] father we have [is] \Abraam\fnAbraam{},
for I say to you that God is able out of these rocks to raise up children to \Abraam.
\VS{9} But already the ax to the root of the trees is laid.
Every tree therefore not producing good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.
\VS{10} And the crowds were asking him saying: What therefore should we do?
\VS{11} And answering he said to them:
Let\fnImperative{} the [one] having two tunics share with the [one] not having [any],
and the [one] having bread, let\fnImperative{} him do likewise.
\VS{12} And tax-gatherers also came to be baptized and they said to him:
Teacher, what shall we do?
\VS{13} And he says to them: Be doing\footnote{PRASS\={O} ("be doing/practicing") is a general verb,
not a specialized term for tax collection — it shares its root with English "practice."
Most translations render it "collect no more than authorized,"
importing the tax-collector context into the verb itself.
John's actual instruction is broader: exceed nothing beyond what has been ordered for you ---
a general principle of not overstepping one's mandate, here applied to this group's particular occupation.}
no more than what is commanded you.
\VS{14} And also those serving as soldiers were asking him saying:
And what shall we do? And he said to them:
Extort no one nor blackmail [anyone], and be satisfied with your wages.
\VS{15} But [to] the people waiting for and all [those] reasoning in their hearts concerning \John,
whether he might be the Anointed\fnChristos{} [One]
\VS{16} \John was answering saying to them:
I on the one hand baptize you in\fnInWith{} water,
but [one] stronger than I comes,
of whom I am not worthy to loose the thong of his sandals.
He will baptize you in\fnInWith{} the Holy Spirit and fire,
\VS{17} of whom the winnowing fork in his hand will clean out his threshing floor,
and he will gather the wheat into his storehouse,
but the chaff he will burn in fire inextinguishable.
\VS{18} Many [things] therefore and other [things] he was proclaiming, entreating the people.
\VS{19} But \Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him
concerning \Herodias the wife of his brother,
and concerning all the wickedness\fnPoneros{} that \Herod had done,
\VS{20} and this added to everything: he locked \John up in prison.
\subsubsection{The Baptism of \Iesous}
\VS{21} Now it came to pass when all the people were baptized
and \Iesous was baptized and praying, [that] heaven opened,
\VS{22} and the Holy Spirit came down in visible-form as [a] dove upon him,
and [a] voice came to pass out of heaven:
You are my agape-beloved son, in you I have been well pleased.
\subsubsection{The Geneaology of \Iesous}
