\subsection{Mark 7}

\subsubsection{Breaking Human Traditions}
\VS{1} And the Pharisees and some of the scribes are gathered to him having come from \Ieros.
\VS{2} And having seen some of his disciples that with defiled hands,
that is unwashed, eat bread,
\VS{3} --- for the Pharisees and all the Jews, if they not wash to [the] fist their hands,
they do not eat, holding the tradition of the elders.
\VS{4} And from the fields, if they should not sprinkle, they do not eat,
but indeed many things there are that they have received to be holding,
[the] dipping\footnote{[BAPTISMOS]} of cups and pitchers and kettles and [dining] couches ---
\VS{5} and the Pharisees and the scribes ask him,
Why do your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders,
but with defiled hands eat bread?
\VS{6} But he says to them:
Well did Isaiah prophesy concerning you hypocrites, as it is written that\footnote{Isa.29:13}:
\begin{verse}
This people honors me with their lips \\
But their heart holds off from me afar; \\
\VS{7} But futilely they worship me \\
Teaching [as] teachings the commandments of men.
\end{verse}
\VS{8} Having left the commandment of God you hold the traditions of men.
\VS{9} And he says to them: Well do you set aside the commandments of God,
that you may keep your traditions.
\VS{10} For \Moses said: Be honoring your father and your mother,
and the [one] speaking evil of father or mother shall be brought to the end\fnImperative{} by death.
\VS{11} But you say: If someone\fnAnthropos{} should say to his father or mother:
Corban, which is: [a] gift [to God], whatever by me you may have been profited,
\VS{12} You no longer allow him to do anything for his father or mother,
\VS{13} making void the word\fnLogos{} of God by your traditions that you have handed down,
and many such similar [things] you do.
\VS{14} And again having called upon the crowd he says to them:
Hear from me, all [of you], and understand.
\VS{15} There is nothing outside of [a] person\fnAnthropos{} entering into him that is able to defile him;
But the [things] proceeding out are the [things] defiling the person.
\VS{16} \footnote{vs 16: DW \vulgate{} \koine{} most; omit vs. 16:
B\sinaiticus{} few} If anyone has ears to be hearing, let him be hearing\fnImperative{}.
\VS{17} And when he entered into the house from the crowd, his disciples asked him [about] the parable.
\VS{18} And he says to them:
Are you thus also without understanding?
Do you not understand that everything outside entering into the man is not able to defile him?
\VS{19} That it does not enter into the heart but into the belly,
and proceeds out into the latrine? Thus he declares all foods clean.
\VS{20} But he was saying to them that:
What comes out of man, this defiles the person\fnAnthropos{}.
\VS{21} For from inside the heart of men proceed out evil reasonings, fornications, thefts, murders,
\VS{22} adulteries, avarices, wickedness\fnPoneros{}, deceit, licentiousness, [an] evil eye, slander, arrogance,
\VS{23} all these wicked\fnPoneros{} [things] from inside proceed out and defile the man.
\subsubsection{A Syrophoenician Woman's Faith}
\VS{24} Having gone up from there he departed into the region of \Tyre
and \Sidon\footnote{``and \Sidon'' \sinaiticus{}B\hesychian{}\koine{} \vulgate{} most; omit: DW}.
And having entered into [a] house he wished no one to know, and he was unable to escape notice.
\VS{25} But immediately [a] woman having heard concerning him,
whose daughter was having [an] unclean spirit, having come fell before his feet.
\VS{26} But the woman was [a] Greek, in the race Syrophonician,
and she asked him that he cast the demon out of her daughter.
\VS{27} And he was saying to her:
Let the children first be filled\fnImperative{},
for it is not good to take the bread of the children and throw [it] to the puppies\footnote{or ``little dogs''}.
\VS{28} But she answered and says to him: Yes%
\footnote{``Yes'' \sinaiticus{}B\koine{}\hesychian{} \vulgate{} most; omit: \papyrus{45} DW}
Lord, and the puppies under the table eat from the children's crumbs.
\VS{29} And he said to her: Because of this word,
Be going, the demon is come out [of your] daughter.
\VS{30} And having departed into her house she found the child thrown upon the bed and the demon gone out.
\subsubsection{Healing a Deaf Mute}
\VS{31} And again having gone out of the regions of \Tyre,
he came through \Sidon to the sea of \Galilee up along the middle of the regions of the Decapolis\footnote{``the Ten Cities''}.
\VS{32} And they brought to him [a] deaf and speech impeded [man],
and they called upon him in order that he lay his hand on him.
\VS{33} And taking him aside from the crowd privately,
he thrust his fingers into his ears and having spat he touched his tongue.
\VS{34} And having looked up into heaven he groaned and says to him:
Ephphatha, which is: Be opened up.
\VS{35} And his hearing was opened, and immediately the bonds of his tongue were loosed,
and he spoke straight.
\VS{36} And he ordered them in order that they tell no one;
but as much as he ordered them, these rather heralded all the more.
\VS{37} And beyond all measure they were astounded saying:
He has done everything well, and the deaf he makes to be hearing and the mute to be speaking.
