\lettrine[lraise=0.1]{W}{ithout} our inner world, our consciousness, we can't experience the outer world either. We can't explore it. We can't do Science. We can't make Art. Whenever humans do anything at all, their consciousness is right there, in the fat middle.

|
Of course others have consciousness too --- their own interior lives.
|
|
Something I cannot directly experience at all.
|
|
|
|
We can tell each other about our interior lives.
|
|
|
|
But even without words, I can infer the inner state of others
|
|
from their body language.
|
|
Psychologists tell us that when communicating
|
|
emotions, body language and tone of voice account
|
|
for the vast majority of communication anyway ---
|
|
the words themselves only a small fraction.
|
