Angelica Kaufman (1741\EnDash{}1807) wasn't an armonica virtuoso\EmDash{}she was a famous painter of her day who apparently played the armonica (exceptionally well) for personal amusement. As a youth she excelled at both music and painting, and in ??? made the decision to make painting her profession. \ldots[???]

Angelica is pictured here in a copper plate by Karl Rahl and appeared 1819 as an illustration in the Viennese reproduction of the first collection of ``Schriften'' (``Writings'') of Helferich Peter Sturz (1736\EnDash{}1779), which had been originally published 1779 in Leipzig. Angelica seems to be playing her armonica to gain inspiration\EmDash{}her easel stands at the ready for her next painting. Of her playing Sturz wrote:

It is likely that Kauffmann, Italian in all but birth, who eventually blossomed as an exquisite performer on the armonica[King, 111 ???] came to know the instrument at the time of her sojourn in Naples through the performances of Marianne Davies.[Pace 279\EnDash{}280]
|
|
|
|
Angelica's is one of only two images of people playing armonicas by artists of that era (the other being the image of an anonymous armonica player seen below[???]).
