\VS{1} Or are you ignorant, brothers, for I speak to [those] knowing the law, that the law
|
|
has dominion over man for as much time as he zoe-lives\fnZoe{}?
|
|
\VS{2} For the woman under-[a]-man [is] bound to her zoe-living\fnZoe{} husband by law.
|
|
But if the man die, she is loosed from the law of her husband.
|
|
\VS{3} Therefore while [her] husband zoe-lives\fnZoe{},
|
|
she will be called adulteress if she marry another man. But if the husband
|
|
die, she is free from the law, so she is not [an] adulteress when she marries
|
|
another man.
|
|
\VS{4} So that, my brothers, you also became dead to the law
|
|
through the body of Christ, that you marry another, to the [one] raised from the
|
|
dead, in order that we bear fruit to God.
|
|
\VS{5} For when we were in the
|
|
flesh, the passions of sins [which were] by the law were operative in our members
|
|
to bear fruit to death.
|
|
\VS{6} But now we are delivered from the law, having
|
|
died in which we were held, so that we be slaving in newness of spirit and
|
|
not oldness of letter.
|
|
\VS{7} What therefore will we say? The law [is] sin? May
|
|
it not be! Rather, I did not know sin except through the law. For I had not
|
|
known desire\footnote{i.e. ``coveting''} unless the law was saying: You will
|
|
not desire\footnote{i.e. ``covet''}.
|
|
\VS{8} But receiving opportunity, sin
|
|
through the law works in me every desire\footnote{i.e. ``coveting''}. For
|
|
apart from [the] law sin [is] dead.
|
|
\VS{9} But once I was zoe-living\fnZoe{} apart from the law,
|
|
but the commandment having come, sin came-to-zoe-life\fnZoe{},
|
|
\VS{10} So I was dead.
|
|
And the commandment [which was] to zoe-life\fnZoe{} was found by me [to be] to death.
|
|
\VS{11} For sin, having taken opportunity through the commandment, deceived me,
|
|
and through it, killed [me].
|
|
\VS{12} So that the law [is] holy, and the commandment holy and just and good.
|
|
\VS{13} Therefore the good [thing] became to me death? May it not
|
|
be! Rather sin, in order that it appear sin, through the good [thing] worked to me
|
|
death, in order that sin become exceedingly sinful.
|
|
\VS{14} For we know that
|
|
the law is spiritual, but I am fleshly sold under sin.
|
|
\VS{15} For what I do, I do not know\footnote{or ``understand''}, for what I do not wish,
|
|
this I practice. But what I hate, this I do.
|
|
\VS{16} But if what I do not wish,
|
|
this I do, I consent to the law that [it is] good.
|
|
\VS{17} So now I no longer work
|
|
it, but sin dwelling in me, that is, in my flesh, [a] good [thing]. For the wishing is
|
|
present in me, but working the good [is] not.
|
|
\VS{19} For I do not do [the] good that
|
|
I wish, but [the] evil which I do not wish, this I practice.
|
|
\VS{20} But if I do
|
|
this [thing] which I do not wish, it is no longer I working it but sin dwelling in
|
|
me.
|
|
\VS{21} I find therefore the law [that] when I wish to be doing the good, that
|
|
the evil is present in me.
|
|
\VS{22} For I concur with the law of God according
|
|
to the inner man,
|
|
\VS{23} but I see another law in my members warring
|
|
against the law of my mind, and imprisoning me in the law of sin [which] is in my
|
|
members.
|
|
\VS{24} Wretched man [am ]I! Who will deliver me from the body of this
|
|
death?
|
|
\VS{25} Grace\footnote{i.e. ``Thanks''} to God through Jesus Christ our
|
|
Lord. Therefore I myself in [my] mind am enslaved to [the] law of God, but in [my] flesh
|
|
to [the] law of sin.
