>> Let everything that has breath praise the LORD! Praise the LORD!
Occasion: Wonder at absolutely everything
Lord, tonight it isn't one thing that undoes me.
It's all of it at once ---
that there is anything here rather than nothing,
that matter learned to breathe,
that breath learned to notice itself breathing.
I don't know how to hold a thought this size.
Galaxies with names I'll never learn.
Creatures at the bottom of the sea
that have never seen light
and don't need to.
Every person who ever lived,
each one convinced, for a while,
that they were the center of it.
And somehow, still, here I am,
one small instance of the whole astonishing fact,
awake enough tonight to notice it.
I'm not asking You to explain it,
as if I could hold one cup of that ocean.
I just want to stand inside the size of it for a minute
before I go back to my small, particular life.
Everything that has breath ---
the whale, the wren, the stranger down the street,
the newborn who hasn't learned yet what breathing is for ---
all of it praising You
just by being what it is.
Let me be one more voice in that cosmic chorus,
too small to matter on my own,
but real, nonetheless, in You.
Amen. |
