\subsubsection{The Sending of the Twelve Apostles}
|
|
\VS{1} But calling together the twelve he gave to them power and authority over all
|
|
demons and to be healing diseases,
|
|
\VS{2} and he sent them to be preaching the kingdom of God and to be healing,
|
|
\VS{3} and said to them: Be taking nothing to the way, neither staff,
|
|
nor knapsack, nor loaf, nor silver, nor to have two tunics.
|
|
\VS{4} And into whose house you enter, there be remaining and from there be departing.
|
|
\VS{5} And whoever receive you not, departing from that city be shaking off
|
|
the dust from your feet as [a] witness upon them.
|
|
\VS{6} But going out they were going through the towns proclaiming and healing everywhere.
|
|
|
|
\subsubsection{Herod's Confusion about Jesus}
|
|
\VS{7} But Herod the tetrarch heard all that came to pass, and he was perplexed,
|
|
because of what was said by some that John was risen from the dead,
|
|
\VS{8} by some the Elias was revealed, but by others that one of the ancient prophets had arisen.
|
|
\VS{9} So Herod said: I [myself] beheaded John;
|
|
who is this concerning whom I hear such [things]? And he seeking to see him.
|
|
|
|
\subsubsection{The Feeding of the Five Thousand}
|
|
\VS{10} and the apostles having returned related to him what they had done.
|
|
And taking them along he withdrew privately to [the] city being called Bethsaida.
|
|
\VS{11} But the crowds having known followed him.
|
|
And welcoming them he spoke to them concerning the kingdom of God, and those
|
|
having need of healing he healed.
|
|
\VS{12} Now the day began to be spent, so the twelve having come said to him:
|
|
Disperse the crowd, that having proceeded into the surrounding towns and fields they may rest and find provisions, for here are we in [a] wilderness.
|
|
\VS{13} But he said to them: [you] give to them to eat.
|
|
But they said: There is not to us more than five loaves and two fish,
|
|
unless having gone we buy food for all these people.
|
|
\VS{14} For they were [about] five hundred men. So he said to his disciples: Have
|
|
them sit in groups of [about] fifty.
|
|
\VS{15} And thus they did, and all sat.
|
|
|
|
\VS{16} So having taken the five loaves and the two fishes, having looked up
|
|
to heaven he blessed them and broke them, and was giving [them] to the disciples
|
|
to set before the crowd.
|
|
\VS{17} And all ate and were filled. And the
|
|
surplus of fragments gathered by them was twelve baskets.
|
|
|
|
\subsubsection{Peter's Confession}
|
|
\VS{18} And it came to pass while he was praying alone the disciples were
|
|
with him, and he asked them saying: Who do the crowds say I am?
|
|
\VS{19} So
|
|
answering they said: John the Baptist, others Elia, others that one of the
|
|
ancient prophets has arisen.
|
|
\VS{20} So he says to them: But who do
|
|
\underline{you} say I am? But Peter answering said: The Christ of God.
|
|
\VS{21} But rebuking them he commanded [them] to be saying this to no one,
|
|
\VS{22} saying that: The son of man must suffer many [things] and be rejected by the elders
|
|
and chief priests and scribes and be killed and on the third day rise.
|
|
|
|
\subsubsection{A Call to Discipleship}
|
|
\VS{23} And he was saying to them: If anyone wish to be coming after me,
|
|
let\fnImperative{} him renounce\footnote{or ``deny''} himself and take
|
|
his cross and be following me.
|
|
\VS{24} For whoever wishes to save his psyche-life\fnPsyche{} will lose\fnApollumi{} it,
|
|
but whoever loses\fnApollumi{} his psyche-life\fnPsyche{} because of me, this [one] will save it.
|
|
\VS{25} For what does it profit [a] man
|
|
having gained the whole world but having lost\fnApollumi{} or forfeited\fnZemioo{} himself?
|
|
\VS{26} For whoever is ashamed of me
|
|
and [my] words, of this one will the son of man be ashamed, when he comes in his
|
|
glory and [the glory] of his father and of the holy angels.
|
|
\VS{27} But truly I say to
|
|
you, There are some having stood here who will \negd{not} taste of
|
|
death until they see the kingdom of God.
|
|
|
|
\subsubsection{The Transfiguration}
|
|
\VS{28} But it came to pass after these words [it was] [about] the eighth day, and taking Peter and John and James he went up to the mountain to pray.
|
|
\VS{29} And it
|
|
came to pass while he was praying the visible-form of his face [became] other and his
|
|
garments shone\footnote{or ``flashed''} white.
|
|
\VS{30} And behold two men were talking with him, who were Moses and Elias,
|
|
\VS{31} who having been seen in glory they were discussing his exit,
|
|
which he was [about] to be fulfilling in Jerusalem.
|
|
\VS{32} But Peter and those with him were weighed down with
|
|
sleep. But having kept awake they saw his glory and that of the two men
|
|
having stood with him.
|
|
\VS{33} And it came to pass while they were going
|
|
away from him, Peter said to Jesus: Master, it is good\footnote{or
|
|
``beautiful''} we are here, and let us make three shelters, one for you and
|
|
one for Moses and one for Elia, not knowing what he says.
|
|
\VS{34} But while
|
|
he says these [things a] cloud came to pass and over-shadowed them, and they were made
|
|
afraid when they entered the cloud.
|
|
\VS{35} And [a] voice came to pass out of
|
|
the cloud saying: This is my chosen son, Be hearing him.
|
|
\VS{36} And when
|
|
the voice came to pass Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent and
|
|
reported in those days what they had seen to no one.
|
|
|
|
\subsubsection{Healing a Boy with an Unclean Spirit}
|
|
\VS{37} Now it came to pass on the next day when they came down from the
|
|
mountains there was gathered to him [a] great crowd,
|
|
\VS{38} and behold [a] man
|
|
from the crowd cried out saying: Teacher, I ask [of you] to look upon my son, for he
|
|
is my only-begotten\fnMonogenes{},
|
|
\VS{39} and behold [a] spirit takes him, and suddenly he cried
|
|
out and convulses him with foam, and he scarcely departs from bruising him.
|
|
\VS{40} And I requested [of your] disciples that they cast it out, and they were
|
|
unable.
|
|
\VS{41} But answering Jesus said: O unbelieving and perverted
|
|
generation, How long\footnote{or ``Until when''} will I be with you and endure
|
|
you? Bring your son here.
|
|
\VS{42} But when he was bringing him the demon threw him down and convulsed him.
|
|
But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child and returned him to his father.
|
|
\VS{43} And all were amazed at the majesty of God.
|
|
|
|
\subsubsection{Another Prediction of Jesus's Suffering}
|
|
So when all were marveling at what [things] he had done he said to his disciples:
|
|
\VS{44} Place in your ears these words, for the son of man is [about] to be
|
|
delivered up into the hands of men.
|
|
\VS{45} But they were not understanding this word,
|
|
and it was hidden from them in order that they not perceive it,
|
|
and they were fearing to ask\fnErotao{} him concerning this word.
|
|
|
|
\subsubsection{Concerning the Greatest}
|
|
\VS{46} So [a] dispute came among them, who might be [the] greater among them.
|
|
\VS{47} But Jesus having known the dispute of their hearts,
|
|
having taken [a] child he set him among them,
|
|
\VS{48} and said to them: Whoever receives this child in my name
|
|
receives me, and whoever receives me receives the [one] having sent me, for the
|
|
[one] being least among you, this [one] is great.
|
|
|
|
\subsubsection{On the Right Side}
|
|
\VS{49} But answering John said:
|
|
Master, we know someone casting out demons in your name, and we were
|
|
forbidding him, because he does not follow us.
|
|
\VS{50} But Jesus said to
|
|
him: Be not forbidding [him]; for whoever is not against us is for us.
|
|
|
|
\subsubsection{Rejection in Samaria}
|
|
\VS{51} Now it came to pass when the days of his death were fulfilled he set
|
|
his face to be proceeding to Jerusalem,
|
|
\VS{52} and he sent messengers before his face.
|
|
And having proceeded they went to [the] village of the Samaritans, in order to prepare him.
|
|
\VS{53} And they did not receive him,
|
|
for his face was proceeding to Jerusalem.
|
|
\VS{54} But when James and John
|
|
saw they said: Lord, do you wish we call fire down from heaven and consume
|
|
them \footnote{insert ``as Elijah did.'' DW \koine{}; txt: \papyrus{45,75}\sinaiticus{}B \vulgate{} }?
|
|
\VS{55} And having turned he rebuked them\footnote{``rebuked them''
|
|
\papyrus{45,75} \sinaiticus{}BW \hesychian{}; ``rebuked them and said: You do not know of what sort of spirit you are.
|
|
\VS{56} For the son of man did not come to destroy
|
|
[the] psyche-life\fnPsyche{} of men but to save [them]'': \koine{} }.
|
|
\VS{56} And they proceeded to another village.
|
|
|
|
\subsubsection{Challenging Professed Followers}
|
|
\VS{57} And when they were proceeding in the road someone said to him:
|
|
I will follow you wherever you depart.
|
|
\VS{58} And Jesus said to him: The foxes have holes and the birds of
|
|
heaven nest, but the son of man has nowhere to lay his head.
|
|
\VS{59} So he said to another: Be following me.
|
|
But he said: Allow me first to depart to bury my father.
|
|
\VS{60} But he said to him: Let\fnImperative{} the dead bury their own dead,
|
|
but you having departed proclaim the kingdom of God.
|
|
\VS{61} But another said to him: I will follow you Lord,
|
|
but first allow me to take leave of my household.
|
|
\VS{62} But Jesus said to him: No one having set his hand to the plow and looking back is suitable for the kingdom of God.
|
