Subsequently Tchaikowsky visited Paris, and encountered a new orchestral instrument 'midway between a tiny piano and a Glockenspiel, with a divinely wonderful sound.' Tchaikowsky substituted the celesta for the armonica in subsequent performances\EmDash{}perhaps because the celesta is louder than the armonica (there being no amplification yet), and because the celesta being a keyboard instrument it was far easier to find players.
