> When Father and Mother Forsake Me
>> When my father and my mother forsake me, then the LORD will take me up.
Occasion: Loss of parents
Lord, I keep reaching for the phone
to tell them something,
before I remember --- they won't answer anymore.
I'm an adult.
I've been one for a long time.
I didn't expect to feel like an orphan at this age,
but that's the word that keeps echoing.
No one stands between me
and the front of the ``mortality line'' anymore.
Now I'm next.
I'm not ready for that.
I have so many questions
only they could have answered,
family stories I'll never get right,
things I meant to ask
and put off asking.
When my parents left me ---
not by choice, Lord, I know that ---
they still left a hole shaped like them.
Show me how to live with what's left undone between us,
with the questions with no one left to ask,
with this strange new place in line.
I called on them my whole life, Lord.
Now I need to call on You.
Amen. |
