> Do Not Forsake Me When My Strength Fails
>> Cast me not off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength faileth.
Occasion: Retirement
Lord, I cleared out my desk today.
Handed in my badge.
Walked to my car with my box,
and without anywhere I have to be tomorrow.
I thought I'd feel free.
Mostly I feel unmoored.
Don't cast me off in my old age.
But that's not really my fear.
My fear is smaller and stranger:
that I don't know who I am
without the job that once told me.
Show me what You always saw in me
beneath the title.
The part that was never on a badge.
Give me new work for these hands,
even if no one pays for it.
Give me a reason to get up
that isn't just a paycheck.
I'm not finished, Lord.
I've just changed seasons.
Amen.
