> A Heritage from the Lord
>> Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD. The fruit of the womb is his reward.
Occasion: The arrival of a new child
Lord, there is a new weight in this house tonight ---
almost as light as nothing,
but heavier than anything I have held before.
Ten fingers.
Ten toes.
A life that did not exist last year.
I did not form this child.
I only received one.
Thank You for entrusting me with what is Yours.
Teach me to love without gripping too tight.
Give me patience for the nights that blur into morning,
and joy that does not depend on sleep.
This heart beats separate from mine,
and yet --- our hearts beat as one.
Make me worthy of this heritage, Lord ---
one lullaby,
one diaper,
one 3 a.m. at a time.
Amen. |
