\subsection{The Ambras Collection}

The first mention of a specifically glass musical instrument occurs in a 1596 inventory of the Ambras Collection at the Kunsthistorisches Museum ('Art History Museum'), Vienna which describes 'Ain instrument von glaszwerch'. This probably refers to the ``Glasglockenklavier'' ('glass glocken-keyboard') dedicated to Ferdinand of Tyrol, made in the 2nd half of the 16th century and currently on display at the museum. It was a keyboard instrument, three and a third octaves in compass[F/G/A chromatically to g2/a2]. At this point it's not possible to say if the instrument worked with glass-bells or glass-bars.\footnote{Private correspondence with the Kunsthistorisches Museum}
