\subsubsection{Iesous Brought Before Pilate}
|
|
\VS{1} And when all their multitude stood up they led him to Pilate.
|
|
\VS{2} So they began to accusing him saying: We have found this [man] to be
|
|
perverting our nation and forbidding tribute\footnote{or ``tax''} be given to Caesar,
|
|
and saying himself [to be] Anointed\fnChristos{} [One] [the] king.
|
|
\VS{3} But Pilate asked him saying: Are you
|
|
the king of the Jews? So answering him he said: You say [it].
|
|
\VS{4} But Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds: I find no guilt in this man.
|
|
\VS{5} But they were growing insistent saying that: He incites the people,
|
|
teaching all of Judea and beginning from Galilee to here.
|
|
|
|
\subsubsection{Iesous Brought Before Herod}
|
|
\VS{6} But Pilate having heard asked if the man is Galilean.
|
|
\VS{7} And having known that it is of Herod's authority sent him to Herod,
|
|
he also being in Jerusalem in those days.
|
|
\VS{8} Now when Herod saw Iesous he rejoiced greatly, for he was
|
|
for some time wanting to see him because of hearing concerning him, and he
|
|
was hoping to see some sign come to pass by him.
|
|
\VS{9} So he questioned him
|
|
with many words; but he answered him nothing.
|
|
\VS{10} But the chief priests
|
|
and the scribes had stood vigorously accusing him.
|
|
\VS{11} So Herod having
|
|
treated him with contempt [along] with his troops and having mocked [him], having seized
|
|
[his] shining clothing he sent him back to Pilate.
|
|
\VS{12} Now they were become
|
|
friends, Herod and Pilate, in that day with each other; for they were
|
|
formerly being in opposition to each other.
|
|
|
|
\subsubsection{Iesous Brought Before the Crowd}
|
|
\VS{13} Now Pilate having called
|
|
together the chief priests and the rulers and the people
|
|
\VS{14} said to
|
|
them: You brought to me this man as misleading the people, and behold I
|
|
having examined him before you found in this man no guilt of what you accuse
|
|
him.
|
|
\VS{15} But neither [did] Herod, for he sent him back to us; and behold
|
|
nothing worthy of death has been done by him.
|
|
\VS{16} Therefore having
|
|
disciplined him I will release him.
|
|
\VS{17} Now he had need to release to
|
|
them one [man] according to the feast
|
|

|
\VS{18} And they cried out altogether saying: Be removing
|
|
this one, and release to us Barabbas;
|
|
\VS{19} who was through [a] certain
|
|
revolt come to pass in the city and [through] murder thrown in prison.
|
|
\VS{20} But
|
|
Pilate again called out to them: wanting to release Iesous.
|
|
\VS{21} But they
|
|
were crying out saying: Crucify crucify him.
|
|
\VS{22} But the third [time] he said
|
|
to them: But what evil has this [man] done? I found nothing guilty of death in
|
|
him. Therefore having disciplined [him] I will release him.
|
|
\VS{23} But they were being urgent with great cries demanding he be crucified,
|
|
and their cries were prevailing.
|
|
\VS{24} And Pilate decided to let their request come to
|
|
pass.
|
|
\VS{25} So he released the [one] because of revolt and murder thrown in
|
|
prison, whom they demanded, but Iesous he delivered up to their will.
|
|
|
|
\subsubsection{The Crucifixion}
|
|
\VS{26} And as they were leading him away, having taken hold of Simon [a]
|
|
certain Cyrenian coming from the country they laid upon him to be bearing
|
|
the cross after Iesous.
|
|
\VS{27} Now there followed him [a] great multitude of
|
|
the people and women who were bewailing and lamenting him.
|
|
\VS{28} But
|
|
having turned to them Iesous said: Daughters of Jerusalem, Be not weeping
|
|
over me; rather over yourselves and over your children,
|
|
\VS{29} because
|
|
behold days will come in which they will say: Blessed [are] the barren, and
|
|
[those] bellies\footnote{wombs} which have not begotten, and [those] breasts which have not given suck.
|
|
\VS{30} Then will they begin to be saying to the mountains: Fall upon us,
|
|
and to the hills: Cover us.
|
|
\VS{31} Because if they do these [things] with [a] green
|
|
tree, what will come to pass with the dry?
|
|
|
|
\VS{32} Now they were also
|
|
bringing two other criminals with him to be taken away.
|
|
\VS{33} And when
|
|
they came to the place called Cranion, here they crucified him and the
|
|
evil-doers, one on the right and one on the left.
|
|
\VS{34} \footnote{insert
|
|
``But Iesous was saying: Father forgive them, for they know not what they do"
|
|

|
|
\VS{35} And the people had stood observing. But the rulers were ridiculing
|
|
[him] saying: He saved others, let\fnImperative{} him save himself, if this
|
|
[one] is the Anointed\fnChristos{} [One] of God, the chosen.
|
|
\VS{36} The soldiers having come also
|
|
mocked him, bringing sour wine to him,
|
|
\VS{37} and saying: If you are the
|
|
king of the Jews, save yourself.
|
|
\VS{38} And there was also [an] inscription
|
|
upon him: This [is] the king of the Jews.
|
|
|
|
\VS{39} And one of the hanging
|
|
evil-doers was slandering him: Aren't you the Anointed\fnChristos{} [One]? Save yourself and us.
|
|
\VS{40} But answering, the other rebuking him said: Do you not fear God,
|
|
because you are in this judgment?
|
|
\VS{41} And we [are here] justly, for we receive
|
|
[things] worthy of what we have done; but this [one] did nothing improper.
|
|
\VS{42} And he was saying: Iesous, remember me when you come
|
|
in\footnote{``into'': \papyrus{75}B; ``in'': \sinaiticus{}AW\koine{}
|
|
}
|
|
your kingdom.
|
|
\VS{43} And
|
|
he said to him: Truly I say to you, \footnote{Whether this should be translated 'Truly I say to you, Today you will be with me..' or 'Truly I say to you today, You will be with me...' is not completely clear from the Greek.} Today will you be with me in paradise.
|
|
|
|
\VS{44} And it was already [about] [the] sixth hour and darkness came to pass upon all the land until [the] ninth hour
|
|
\VS{45} of the sun being eclipsed. And the veil
|
|
of the temple was rent in the middle.
|
|
\VS{46} And having cried out with [a]
|
|
great cry Iesous said: Father, into your hands I entrust my spirit.\footnote{Ps.31:5} And
|
|
saying this he breathed out his last.
|
|
|
|
\VS{47} But the centurion seeing what
|
|
came to pass was glorifying God saying: Certainly this man was just.
|
|
\VS{48} And all the crowd gathered together to observe these [things], having observed what came to pass, beating their breasts they were returning.
|
|
\VS{49} But all those known to him had stood from afar,
|
|
and the women who followed him from Galilee, to see these [things].
|
|
|
|
\subsubsection{Iesous's Burial}
|
|
\VS{50} And behold [a] man by name Ioseph the councilor
|
|
being present, [a] good and just man
|
|
\VS{51} --- this [one] was not consenting to
|
|
their intention and activity --- from Arimathea [a] city of Judea, who was
|
|
expecting\footnote{or ``waiting for'', ``receiving''} the kingdom of God,
|
|
\VS{52} this [one] having come to Pilate requested the body of Iesous,
|
|
\VS{53} and having taken [it] down wrapped it in linen,
|
|
and placed him in [a] tomb hewn out of rock, in which \negd{no one} was yet laid.
|
|
\VS{54} And [the] day was of [the] preparation, and [the] Sabbath was dawning.
|
|
\VS{55} So the women following, who were come out of Galilee with him,
|
|
observed the tomb and as they placed his body.
|
|
\VS{56} So having returned they prepared spices and ointments. And on
|
|
the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment.
|
