\subsection{\Ioannes 1}
\subsubsection{Prologue to the Gospel}
\lettrine[lraise=0]{I}{n} the beginning%
\footnote{Clearly an allusion to Genesis 1:1}
was the Logos\fnLogos{},
and the Logos was with God%
\footnote{Greek at this time did not have
upper vs. lower case letters. `God' vs. `god' has to be determined from context.},
and the Logos was God.
\VS{2} He was in [the] beginning with God.
\VS{3} All [things] came-into-being through him,
and apart from him came-into-being not one [thing] that has
come-into-being%
\footnote{"come-into-being": the same Greek verb GINOMAI three times in the same sentence ---
for emphasis.}.
\VS{4} In him was \zoe{}-life%
\fnZoe{},
and the \zoe{}-life was the light of humanity.
\VS{5} And the light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness did not master%
\footnote{Can mean 'understand' or `overcome'. Here: perhaps both!} it.
\VS{6} There came [a] person [who] has been sent from God, his name [was] \Ioannes;
\VS{7} He came for [a] witness, that he should witness concerning the light,
that all trust\fnPistisJohn{} through him.
\VS{8} He was not the light, but that he witness concerning the light.
\VS{9} This was the true light, that enlightens everyone,
coming into the world.%
\fnKosmos{}
\footnote{It's unclear where it's ``the true light \ldots
coming into the Cosmos'' or
``that enlightens everyone coming into the world.'' Perhaps both!
}
\VS{10} He was in the world, and the world came-into-being through him,
and the world did not know him.
\VS{11} He came to his own,
and his own did not receive him.%
\footnote{The syntax here is subtle: ``He came to his own [things] (plural neuter pronoun),
and his own [people] (plural masculine pronoun) did not receive him.''}
\VS{12} But as many as received him,
to them he gave authority to become children of God,
to those trusting\fnPistisJohn{} in his name,
\VS{13} those [who] were born not from bloods%
\footnote{The plural may imply both parents --- perhaps `human descent'.}
nor from [the] will of flesh
nor from [the] will of [a] male\fnAner{} but from God.
\VS{14} And the Logos became flesh, and tented%
\footnote{Indicates a temporary, not permanent dwelling.
May also refer to the Tabernacle.}
among us%
\footnote{Anyone at all literate in Hellenistic (Greek) philosophy would
already be acquainted with the 'Cosmic LOGOS'. What the
gospel author is claiming, and would be genuinely shocking to a first
century Hellenistic reader, is the idea of the LOGOS becoming \textbf{flesh}},
and we observed his glory,
glory as of [the] uniquely-begotten\fnMonogenes{} from [the] father,
full of grace and truth.
\VS{15} \Ioannes witnesses about him and has cried out saying:
This was [about] whom I said: The [one] coming after me is become in front of me because he was before%
\footnote{can mean `before' in the sense of Rank, or of Time (he was here first)}.
\VS{16} For from his fullness we all received,
and grace in-place-of%
\footnote{"in-place-of (ANTI): primarily ``instead of'', ``in place of''.
Could mean 1. ``grace instead of grace'' (new covenant replacing the old?), \\
2. ``grace upon grace'' --- a super-abundance, or \\
3. ``grace corresponding to grace''. The most literal reading is 1. See the Septuagint Ex.33:13\ldots{}}

grace.
\VS{17} For the law was given through \Moses,
grace and truth came-into-being%
\footnote{\Ioannes uses GINOMAI here deliberately — the law was \textit{given},
but grace and truth \textit{came-into-being} --- same verb as the Prologue cosmology.}
through \Iesous [the] Anointed.%
\fnChristos{}
\VS{18} No one has ever seen God;
[the] uniquely-begotten
God\footnote{``God'' \papyrus{66,75}\sinaiticus{}B\hesychian{}; ``son'' \koine{} \vulgate{}.
``God'' instead of ``son'' also echoes vs. 1.
Note: only one letter ($\Theta$ vs. $\Upsilon$) would have differentiated these two readings in the manuscripts.

},
the [one] being in the lap\footnote{or 'bosom'} of the father, he has declared%
\footnote{or `explained'} [him].
\subsubsection{The Testimony of \Ioannes the Baptist}
\VS{19} And this is \Ioannes's witness when the Jews sent to him priests and \Leuitess from Jerusalem
that they ask him: Who are you?
\VS{20} And he professed and did not deny, and professed:
I am not the Anointed.
\VS{21} And they asked him,
What then? Are you Elias? And he says:
I am not.
Are you the prophet? And he answered: No.
\VS{22} Then they said to him:
Who are you, so that we may give answer to those having sent us.
What do you say about yourself?
\VS{23} He said:\footnote{Is.40:3}
\begin{verse}
I [am the] voice of [one] crying in the wilderness, \\
Make straight the way of the Lord,
\end{verse}
just as Isaiah the prophet said.
\VS{24} And they had been sent by the Pharisees.
\VS{25} And they asked him%
and said to him:
So why do you baptize if you are not the Anointed nor Elias nor the prophet?
\VS{26} \Ioannes answered them saying: I baptize in water.
In your midst has stood what you do not know,
\VS{27} the [one] coming after me,
of whom I am not worthy that I may loose the thong of his sandal.
\VS{28} These [things] came to pass in Bethany
on the other side of the Jordan, where \Ioannes was baptizing.
\VS{29} On the next day he sees \Iesous coming toward him,
and says: Behold the lamb of God, the [one] taking away the sin of the world\fnKosmos{}.
\VS{30} This is heard concerning whom I said: [A] man\fnAner{}
comes after me that is become before me,
because he was my foremost%
\footnote{Or ``first''. That is, ``has a higher rank than I.''}.
\VS{31} And I did not know him.
But so that he be revealed to Israel,
because of this I came baptizing in water.
\VS{32} And \Ioannes witnessed, saying:
I have seen the spirit coming down as [a] dove out of heaven,
and [he] remained upon him.
\VS{33} And I did not know him,
but the [one who] sent me to be baptizing in water,
he said to me:
Upon whom you see the spirit coming down and remaining upon him,
this is the [one] baptizing in [the] Holy Spirit.
\VS{34} And I have seen,
and have witnessed that this is the Son of God.
\VS{35} On the next day \Ioannes had again stood [there], also two from his disciples.
\VS{36} And when [he] looked upon \Iesous walking he says: Behold the lamb of God.
\VS{37} And the two disciples heard him speaking and they followed \Iesous.
\VS{38} Now when \Iesous turned and saw them following he says to them:
What are you seeking?
And they said to him:
Rabbi, which is saying being translated: Teacher,
where are you staying?
\VS{39} He says to them:
Be coming and you will see.
So they came and saw where he stays,
and they stayed with him that day,
as it was [the] tenth hour.%

\subsubsection{Andrew's Declaration}
\VS{40} Andrew the brother of Simon \Petros was one of the two who heard from \Ioannes and followed him.
\VS{41} He finds first his own brother Simon and says to him:
We have found the Messiah, which is being translated: [the] Anointed.
\VS{42} He brought him to \Iesous.
Having looked upon him, \Iesous said:
You are Simon the son of Jonas, you shall be called Cephas%
\footnote{Aramaic for ``rock''},
which is translated: \Petros.%
\footnote{PETROS, Greek for ``rock''}
\subsubsection{Calling More Disciples}
\VS{43} On the next day he wanted to go forth into Galilee,
and he finds Phillip.
And \Iesous says to him: Be following me.
\VS{44} Now Phillip was from \Bethsaida,
from the city of Andrew and \Petros.
\VS{45} Phillip finds Nathaneal, and says to him:
What is written in the law of \Moses and the
prophets we have found, \Iesous, son of Ioseph, the [one] from Nazareth.
\VS{46} And Nathanael said to him: What good is able to be out of Nazareth?
Phillip says to him: Be coming and see.
\VS{47} \Iesous saw Nathanael coming toward him and says concerning him:
Behold [a] true Israelite in whom there is no deceit.
\VS{48} Nathanael says to him:
Whence do you know me?
\Iesous answered and said to him:
Before Phillip called you, being under the fig tree I saw you.
\VS{49} Nathanael answered him:
Rabbi, you are the Son of God, you are king of Israel.
\VS{50} \Iesous answered and said to him:
Because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree you are trusting?
Greater than these you will see.
\VS{51} Truly truly I say to you,
You will [all]\fnYouPlural{} see heaven having opened
and the angels of God ascending and descending%
\footnote{An allusion to \Iakob\fnIakob{}'s ladder (Gen.28:12) ---
angels ascending and descending.
Note that in Genesis they ascend and descend on the ladder;
here they ascend and descend upon the Son of Humanity. \Ioannes's point is hard to miss.}

upon the Son of Humanity.%
