\subsubsection{Instructions on Prayer}
|
|
\VS{1} And it came to pass when he was in the place where he prayed, as he stopped,
|
|
one of his disciples said to him: Lord, teach us to pray, just as Ioannes also
|
|
taught his disciples.
|
|
\VS{2} So he said to them: When you pray, be saying:
|
|
|
|
\begin{verse}
|
|
Father, let\fnImperative{} your name be holy \\
|
|
Your kingdom come \\
|
|
\VS{3} Be giving to us each day bread for the day \\
|
|
\VS{4} And forgive us our sins, \\
|
|
For we also forgive all [those having] come short towards us. \\
|
|
And lead us not into [the] test.
|
|
\end{verse}
|
|
|
|
\VS{5} And he said to them: Who among you has [a] friend, and he proceeds to
|
|
him during the night and he says to him: Friend, lend me three loaves,
|
|
\VS{6} since my friend has come from the road to me and I do not have
|
|
anything to set before him.
|
|
\VS{7} And that [one] from inside answering said: Be
|
|
not causing trouble for me, I have already shut the door, and my children
|
|
are with me in the bed. I am unable having arisen to give to you.
|
|
\VS{8} I
|
|
say to you, if he will not give to him [the loaves] having arisen because he is his
|
|
friend, because of his insistence will he having arisen give whatever he
|
|
needs.
|
|
|
|
\VS{9} And I say to you, Be asking, and it will be given you; be
|
|
seeking, and you will find; be knocking, and it will be opened to you.
|
|
\VS{10} For everyone asking receives, and [everyone] seeking finds, and to [everyone] knocking it will be opened.
|
|
\VS{11} But from which father among you will his son
|
|
request [a] fish, but instead of [a] fish will give him [a] snake?
|
|
\VS{12} Or he also request [an] egg, will he give him [a] scorpion?
|
|
\VS{13} If therefore you being wicked\fnPoneros{} know good gifts to give to your children,
|
|
how much more will the father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those asking him.
|
|
|
|
\subsubsection{Iesous and Beelzebub}
|
|
\VS{14} And he was casting out [a] demon, and it was mute, so it came [about] when the demon came out the mute spoke, and the crowds marveled.
|
|
\VS{15} But some of
|
|
them said: In Beelzeboul the ruler of demons he casts out demons.
|
|
\VS{16} And others testing [him] were seeking [a] sign; from heaven from him.
|
|
\VS{17} But he
|
|
having known their thoughts said to them: Every kingdom divided against
|
|
itself is laid wasted, and house against house falls.
|
|
\VS{18} Now if satan
|
|
be divided against himself, how does his kingdom stand? For you say I cast
|
|
out demons in Beezeboul.
|
|
\VS{19} But if I cast out demons in Beezeboul, in
|
|
whom do your sons cast [them] out? By this they become your judges.
|
|
\VS{20} But if
|
|
in the finger of God I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come
|
|
upon you.
|
|
\VS{21} But whenever the strong being fully armed guards his own
|
|
court, his possessions are in peace.
|
|
\VS{22} But if one stronger than him
|
|
having entered conquer him, he will take his full armor against whom he had
|
|
prevailed, and will distribute the spoils.
|
|
\VS{23} The [one] not being with me is
|
|
against me, and the [one] not gathering with me scatters.
|
|
|
|
\subsubsection{Response to Iesous's Work}
|
|
\VS{24} Whenever the
|
|
unclean spirit goes out from the man, he goes through dry places seeking
|
|
rest, and not finding [any] he says: I will return to the house from whence I
|
|
departed.
|
|
\VS{25} And having come he finds [it] swept and decorated.
|
|
\VS{26} Then he goes and gathers seven other demons more wicked\fnPoneros{} than himself, and
|
|
having entered they set up house there, and the last [state] of that man becomes
|
|
worse than the first.
|
|
|
|
\subsubsection{The Sign of Jonah}
|
|
\VS{27} Now it came to pass when he was saying these [things a] certain woman having
|
|
lifted up [her] voice said: Blessed [is] the belly\footnote{womb} that bore you and the breasts which gave you suck.
|
|
\VS{28} But he said: On the contrary, blessed are those
|
|
hearing the word of God and guarding [it].
|
|
\VS{29} Now when the crowds were
|
|
gathered even more he began to be saying: This generation is [a] wicked\fnPoneros{}
|
|
generation, it seeks [a] sign, and [a] sign will not be given it except the sign
|
|
of Jonah.
|
|
\VS{30} For just as Jonah became [a] sign to the Ninevites, thus will
|
|
also the son of man be to this pernicious generation.
|
|
\VS{31} [the] queen of the
|
|
south will arise in the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn
|
|
them; for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon,
|
|
and behold [one] greater than Solomon [is] here.
|
|
\VS{32} [the] men of Ninevah will arise
|
|
in the judgment with this generation and condemn them; for they repented
|
|
upon the preaching of Jonah, and behold [one] greater than Jonah [is] here.
|
|
|
|
\subsubsection{Internal Light}
|
|
\VS{33} No one having lit [a] lamp places it in [a] hidden place nor under the peck
|
|
measure, but upon the lampstand, in order that those entering the radiance might see.
|
|
\VS{34} The light of the body is your eye. Whenever your eye be
|
|
clear\footnote{or ``sound,'' ``healthy,'' ``single,'' ``simple''}, even your whole
|
|
body is full of light. But whenever it be diseased\fnPoneros{}, you body also [is] dark.
|
|
\VS{35} Be looking therefore that the light in you be not darkness.
|
|
\VS{36} If therefore your whole body be full of light, not having any part dark, it
|
|
will all be full of light, as when the lamp illumines you with light.
|
|
|
|
\subsubsection{Rebuking the Pharisees and Experts in the Law}
|
|
\VS{37} Now when he spoke [a] Pharisee asked him to breakfast with him; so
|
|
having entered he reclined.
|
|
\VS{38} Now the Pharisee when he saw marveled that he did not first wash before breakfast.
|
|
\VS{39} So the Lord said to him: Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but the inside [of you] is full of robbery and wickedness\fnPoneros{}.
|
|
\VS{40} Ignorant [ones], doesn't the [one] doing the outside also do the inside?
|
|
\VS{41} Nevertheless give what is
|
|
inside to charitable giving and behold all in you is pure.
|
|
|
|
\VS{42} But woe
|
|
to you Pharisees, for you tithe mint and rue and every herb, and pass by the
|
|
judgment and agape-love of God. But it was necessary to do these not leaving
|
|
the others undone.
|
|
\VS{43} But woe to you Pharisees, for you agape-love the
|
|
first seats in the synagogues and the greetings in the marketplaces.
|
|
\VS{44} Woe to you, for you are as the unseen grave, and men walking above do not
|
|
know [of it].
|
|
|
|
\VS{45} But answering one of the lawyers says to him: Teacher, saying
|
|
these [things] you treat us insolently.
|
|
\VS{46} But he said: And woe also to you
|
|
lawyers, for you burden men with burdens difficult to carry, and you with
|
|
one [of your] fingers do not touch these burdens.
|
|
\VS{47} Woe to you, that build the
|
|
graves of the prophets, for your fathers killed them.
|
|
\VS{48} Therefore are
|
|
you witnesses and you agree with the deeds [of your] fathers, for they killed them,
|
|
and you build their graves.
|
|
\VS{49} And because of this the wisdom of God
|
|
said: I will send to them prophets and apostles, and of them they kill and
|
|
persecute,
|
|
\VS{50} in order that the blood of all the prophets shed from the
|
|
foundation of the world be required of this generation,
|
|
\VS{51} from the
|
|
blood of Abel until [the] blood of Zacharius, the [one] destroyed between the altar and the house. Yes, I say to you, it will be required from this generation.
|
|
\VS{52} Woe to you lawyers, for you have taken away the key of knowledge.
|
|
You yourselves do not enter and those entering you prevent\footnote{or
|
|
``hinder''}.
|
|
|
|
\VS{53} And then when he departed the scribes and the Pharisees
|
|
began to have grudge terribly, and to be closely interrogating him,
|
|
\VS{54} lying in wait to catch something from his mouth.
