\subsubsection{The Widow's Offering}
|
|
\VS{1} But looking up he saw those throwing into the treasury the gifts of their riches.
|
|
\VS{2} But he saw [a] certain needy widow throw there two leptas\fnLeptos{},
|
|
\VS{3} and he said: Truly do I say to you that this poor widow has thrown [in] more than all.
|
|
\VS{4} For all these out of their abundance threw into the gifts,
|
|
but this [woman] out of her lack threw in all the living she had.
|
|
|
|
\subsubsection{The Signs of the End of the Age}
|
|
\VS{5} And when some were saying concerning the temple,
|
|
that it was adorned with ornaments and beautiful stones, he said:
|
|
\VS{6} All these [things] that you behold,
|
|
[the] days will come in which there will not be left stone which will not be thrown down.
|
|
\VS{7} But they asked him saying:
|
|
Teacher, when therefore will these [things] be?
|
|
And what [will be] the sign when these [things] are [about] to come to pass?
|
|
\VS{8} And he said: Be seeing that you be not deceived,
|
|
for many will come upon my name saying:
|
|
I am [he], and, The opportune-time\fnKairos{} has drawn nigh\footnote{or ``is come''}.
|
|
Do not go after them.
|
|
\VS{9} But when you hear wars and disorders\footnote{or ``insurrections''}, be not frightened,
|
|
for it is necessary these [things] come to pass first, but not immediately [is] the end\fnTelos{}.
|
|
|
|
\subsubsection{Persecution of Disciples}
|
|
\VS{10} Then he was saying to them: Nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom,
|
|
\VS{11} and there will be great earthquakes and in various places pestilences and famines,
|
|
and [a] fearful [thing] will be [a] great sign from heaven.
|
|
\VS{12} But before these [things] they will lay their hands on you and persecute [you],
|
|
delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons, being brought before kings and governors on account of my name.
|
|
\VS{13} It will prove to be to [a] witness for you.
|
|
\VS{14} Place therefore in your hearts not to prepare to defend yourself.
|
|
\VS{15} For I will give to you mouth and wisdom, which all those opposing will be unable to resist or to contradict.
|
|
\VS{16} But you will be delivered up by parents and brothers and relatives and friends, and [some] will be killed among you,
|
|
\VS{17} and you will be hated by all because of my name.
|
|
\VS{18} And [a] hair on your head they will \negd{not} destroy.
|
|
\VS{19} In your endurance will you acquire your psyche-lives\fnPsyche{}.
|
|
|
|
\subsubsection{The Desolation of \Ierous{}}
|
|
\VS{20} But when you see \Ierous{} circled by
|
|
armies, then will you know that her desolation has drawn nigh.
|
|
\VS{21} Then let\fnImperative{} those in the country not enter into her,
|
|
\VS{22} for these are [the] days of vengeance for all having been written to be fulfilled.
|
|
\VS{23} Woe to those with child and to those giving suck in those days,
|
|
for it will be [a] great calamity upon the earth\fnGe{} and wrath to this people,
|
|
\VS{24} and they will fall by mouth of sword,
|
|
and will be led captive into every nation, and \Ierous{} will be trampled by the nations,
|
|
until the season\fnKairos{} of the nations be fulfilled.
|
|
|
|
\subsubsection{The Arrival of the Son of Man}
|
|
\VS{25} And there will be signs in the sun and moon and stars,
|
|
and upon the earth dismay of the nations in perplexity,
|
|
sounds of [the] sea and of tossing,
|
|
\VS{26} when people\fnAnthropos{} die from fear and of expectation of the [things] coming upon the inhabited-earth;
|
|
for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.
|
|
\VS{27} And then they will see the Son of Humanity coming in [a] cloud with power and great glory.
|
|
\VS{28} But when these [things] begin to come to pass, stand erect and lift up your heads,
|
|
because your release\footnote{or ``redemption''} is at hand.
|
|
|
|
\subsubsection{The Parable of the Fig Tree}
|
|
\VS{29} And he spoke to them [a] parable, Behold the fig and all the trees,
|
|
\VS{30} when they already put out [leaves], seeing from yourselves you know that summer is already near.
|
|
\VS{31} Likewise you also, when you see these [things] come to pass,
|
|
you know that the Kingdom of God is near.
|
|
\VS{32} Truly I say to you that this\footnote{That is, aforementioned} generation
|
|
shall \negd{not} pass away until all come to pass.
|
|
\VS{33} Heaven and earth may pass away, but my words\fnLogos{} will \negd{not} pass away.
|
|
|
|
\subsubsection{Be Ready!}
|
|
\VS{34} But be attending to yourselves lest your hearts be burdened down in dissipation%
|
|
\footnote{or ``carousing''}
|
|
and drunkenness and [the] cares of daily life, and that day suddenly be present
|
|
\VS{35} as [a] snare, for it will rush in upon all those sitting on the face of all the earth.
|
|
\VS{36} So be watching in every opportune-time\fnKairos{}
|
|
asking in order that you prevail to flee all these [things about] to come to pass,
|
|
and be stood before the Son of Humanity.
|
|
|
|
\VS{37} Now he was days teaching in the temple, but nights coming out he spent-the-night on the mount called of Olives.
|
|
\VS{38} And all the people came early to him in the temple to be hearing from him.
|
