\DeclareFixedFootnote{\fnMaria}{MARIA: This is the name for the mother of Iesous used in Matthew's gospel.
Where Luke's infancy narrative gives MARIAM, Matthew's gives
the more Hellenized MARIA throughout (1:16, 1:18) — the form also used elsewhere in the NT
for other women bearing the name (Mary Magdalene, Mary of Bethany, and others), and the form
that passed into Latin and thence into English "Mary." The FNT preserves this distinction
rather than harmonizing the two Gospels to a single spelling: Luke's MARIAM carries the LXX
echo of the prophetess directly; Matthew's MARIA does not draw on it in the same way, at
least not by name alone.
