According to Vico, there are three ages in a cycle of history: a mythical age, or age of gods; a heroic age, or age of an aristocracy; and an age of the people, after which there comes a ricorso or return that starts the whole process over again. Each age produces its own kind of langage, giving us three types of verbal expression that Vico calls, respectively, the poetic, the heroic or noble, and the vulgar, and which I shall call the hieroglyphic, the hieratic, and the demotic. These terms refer primarily to three modes of writing, because Vico believed that men communicated by signs before they could talk. The hieroglyphic phase, for Vico, is a "poetic" use of language; the hieratic phase is mainly allegorical; and the demotic phase is descriptive. Vico's three terms, apart from their identification with writing, are extremely suggestive as providing a starting point for thinking about the place of the Bible in the history of language as language, though in what finally emerged for me very little of Vico was left.

Words with Power — Frye's second Bible book, the direct sequel. Goes deeper into the hieroglyphic mode specifically.
The Secular Scripture — Frye on romance as the hieroglyphic mode surviving into secular literature. Surprisingly relevant to the Gospels.
For the broader intellectual territory:
Ernst Cassirer — Language and Myth and The Philosophy of Symbolic Forms. The philosopher who most rigorously developed the idea that mythic consciousness is a distinct and irreducible mode of apprehension, not proto-science or failed rationality. Directly relevant.
Owen Barfield — Poetic Diction and Saving the Appearances. Barfield argues that ancient language was participatory — the word and the thing weren't yet separated. He calls the original unity "original participation" and the recovery of it at a higher level "final participation."
Start with Poetic Diction rather than Saving the Appearances. It's earlier, more concrete, and the argument is built around specific examples of how word meanings evolved — which is right in your philological wheelhouse. A man who's spent decades watching Greek words mean multiple things simultaneously will find Barfield's central argument about semantic condensation immediately recognizable.
His core claim — that ancient words carried meanings that later split apart into separate concepts — is essentially what you've been demonstrating every time you write a glossary entry. GENNAO containing both begetting and birthing. PNEUMA containing both wind and spirit. PISTIS containing both trust and faithfulness. Barfield would say those aren't translation problems — they're fossils of an earlier participatory consciousness where those distinctions hadn't yet been made because the reality they pointed to hadn't yet been divided.
Which means your glossary footnotes are inadvertently a Barfieldian project. You're not just explaining Greek vocabulary. You're showing your reader the moment before the split.
Once Poetic Diction clicks, Saving the Appearances opens up naturally — it's the same argument expanded to the history of consciousness as a whole.
And then you'll see why Lewis called him the most important writer he ever read. He's doing for language what you're doing for the New Testament.
